The Best of MacGregor
The extension of Sunnybank
MacGregor is located approx thirteen kilometres south east of the Brisbane CBD and is one of a number of residential suburbs surrounding Mount Gravatt which are named after Queensland public figures.
MacGregor was named in 1967 after the Governor of Queensland, Sir William MacGregor who served from 1909 to 1914 and was also the Administrator of British New Guinea from 1887 to 1898. Before becoming its own suburb in 1976, it was previously a part of Sunnybank and immediately south west of Logan Road. However, this boundary has since been moved from Logan Road to the Pacific Motorway. MacGregor is surrounded by the neighbouring suburbs of Nathan, Upper Mount Gravatt, Robertson, Sunnybank, and Eight Mile Plains.
MacGregor has an approximate area of 2.8 kilometres squared. The Pacific Motorway runs along the north east suburb boundary. Mains Road runs along the western boundary while McCullough Street borders the southern boundary. Kessels Road cuts through the middle of the suburb.
A couple of years after the suburb was officially named in 1967, a state high school was established along with the Garden City shopping centre on the suburb’s north east. Later in 1972, the MacGregor primary school was opened. Bulimba Creek and Mimosa Creek run through the suburb, forming a wetland. During 1973 and 1974, a community park was built and is now known as D.M. Henderson Park. It joins with linear reserves along the creeks. All these developments led to a boost in residential properties and subsequently, a boost in the suburb’s population. In 1971, it was estimated that MacGregor had a population of approximately 2700 people. Just five years later in 1976, MacGregor had an approximate population of 5300 people. This significant growth led to many commercial developments in and around the area including Garden City and Sunnybank Plaza, both located just outside of the suburb.
